Griffin Stylus + Pen + Laser Pointer Review

Even though the iOS devices are stylus-free, there are growing numbers of artists, note takers and business users who are more comfortable using a stylus when navigating and creating data and imagery with their iPhones and iPads. But given the single purpose-built functionally of such rubber-tipped styli, its yet another item that has to be carried around. Griffin Technology, a company that knows all about iOS accessories, has combined a tablet stylus with a pen and a laser pointer. It's three separate pointing devices melded into a standalone multi-purpose product. Read on for the full review.

Griffin previously released a single-purpose stylus (see my review), but given its original design constraints, it didn't grab me the way this new, all encompassing combination has. While I'm not a big stylus user, such implements do come in handy when sketching or writing freehand notes. Conversely, it seems that I'm always on the lookout for a pen, from signing invoices to writing quick reminders. With this new Griffin all-in-one pen/stylus/pointer, having the stylus tip interchange with an ink pen is brilliant. The built-in laser pointer is extra icing on the presentation cake.

I wasn't exactly sure how to locate the pen portion of the stylus at first.  I didn't find any instruction sheet accompanying this stylus, so I suspect others may spend a moment wondering the same thing. Was it via a clicker, or a twist of the barrel, or was the rubber tip of the stylus hiding the pen underneath? It was none of the above. The pen is accessed by pulling out the barrel like a pen cap, then flipping it around so that the stylus tip clips into the barrel, leaving the pen tip exposed.

After discovering how the pen, stylus and laser pointer work, I came away impressed with how elegantly everything just fit together so well. The back of the pen screws off to expose the laser pointer batteries, and the front of the pen can be unscrewed to reveal the replaceable ink cartridge. This makes replacing the ink or batteries a breeze. And unlike Griffin's original tablet stylus, the weight of this combo package also felt just right.

I am completely sold on Griffin's approach. I use a pen on a daily basis, a tablet stylus a few times a week, and a presentation laser pointer once or twice a month. Carrying such items individually is not only a hassle but I have had my share of times when I forgot to pack a stylus and I really could have used one. Likewise, having a laser pointer in a meeting would have been really convenient at times. Now, thanks to the Griffin Stylus + Pen + Laser Pointer, I can have all three with me at all times: simple, convenient and efficient. It's perfect!
